Every
GSM phone includes a large database of GSM network information.
This is because the operator name displayed on the phone display is a
phone feature, not a network feature. The GSM network provides the
phone only the MCC (Mobile Country Code) and MNC (Mobile Network Code)
of the network. If the phone wants to display the operator name to the
user, it must know the names and MCC/MNC codes of all compatible
GSM networks in the world.
The data is inside your phone but have been inaccessible to the user — so far.
This NokiX application allows browsing the network database (called "PLMN" in Nokia DCT-3 phones) directly with the phone itself. Because all the network and country information is already present in your phone, the size of the application is rather small compared to the amount of data it displays.
The displayed network data is naturally as old as the PLMN database on your phone. It is as old as your phone software. To dump out all the network information and update it, use the Write Network List script by NuukiaWorld.
CAUTION: Trying to modify the built-in firmware of a mobile phone may make it practically unrepairable. This applies especially to phones that does not have a separate EEPROM chip for settings and calibrations (e.g. most Nokia 3xxx phones). Before trying to update the flash memory, you need to understand the functions of your flashing program and the whole flashing process, including any checksum updates required. NuukiaWorld does not give any support in flashing-related questions.
